Hydroponic Garden

hydroponic: hydroponic garden
October 10, 2005

This year our class has a hydroponic garden.  Hydroponic gardens can grow plants without soil.  The garden consists of PVC pipes that carry nutrient rich water to each plant.  A fluorescent light operating on a timer provides light.

The students are responsible for keeping a log of the garden.  They measure the plants, take the temperature, and make observations.

We are growing tumbler tomatoes and cherry tomatoes.  We can't wait until they arrive.  I estimate we will see them by December, 2005.

After 6 weeks the plants have really taken off.  I've had to tie them down to prevent them from falling.  As you can see I've had to replace the PVC pipes with longer ones to accomodate the growth.  The cherry tomatoes are doing better that the tumbler tomatoes.

After 18 weeks we are ready to conclude our experiment.  The plants have really grown a lot.  However in the last few days we have noticed that the plants are wilting.  I think it is because the PVC tubes are so impacted with roots that the water cannot get through.  In the future I would design a garden with more room for the roots.  We did grow one tomato though.
