Backpack Friends Registration
(Note: This project is history. It ended in April of 2000)Thank you everyone for your interest in this project. Response has been overwhelming and we appreciate all of the registrations. All of the Backpack Friends have been assigned.

- Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of other cultures.

Questions and Answers
Who can participate in this project? The Backpack Friends project is open to classes in the primary grades.
How many classes can participate?
Registration is limited to five classrooms. We are especially
interested in classes from Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland,
Australia, New Zealand, and any other class that is comfortable
in communicating in English. We will also take one class from the
United States.
When does the project begin?
(Please note new dates) Registration starts November 22 and
closes on December 16. The project begins as soon as you are
accepted and ends on April 14, 2000. Please note that we have
Christmas vacation from December 17 to January 4 and so we won't
be able to respond to any messages.
What will we get? You
will receive a small stuffed toy, a disposable camera, a
notebook, and some information about Bakersfield, California.
What do we do when we get our Backpack Friend?
Backpack Friends are meant for students to take home. They take home
the Backpack Friend, the notebook, and camera. They write about
what they did with the Backpack Friend in the notebook. When
they return to school they E-Mail their notebook entry back to
us. Of course you can E-Mail us about your activities in the
classroom as well.
What about the camera?
Cameras can be used any way you wish. They can go home with the
students or they can be used in the classroom. You can send the
camera back to us and we will develop the pictures. Or you could
develop the pictures yourself and send them back to us. We will
post some of the pictures on our web site for all to see.
What can you tell me about your school?
Franklin Elementary School is a Kindergarten through 6th grade
school located in Bakersfield, California. Located in the southern
end of the great central valley of California, we are 100 miles
north of Los Angeles, California. Summers are hot and dry, while
winters are mild and a little rainy. Bakersfield is known for
country music, oil production, and agriculture.
